What are the advantages of a production home?

When it comes to having a home built from the ground up, you have two basic choices. First, go the custom home route, wherein you are able to have every single aspect of the house constructed to your own specifications. The other choice is to purchase a home that is built by a production builder.

There are several advantages to choosing a production home, one of which is cost. Production homes are typically less expensive than custom homes, making them ideal for first-time buyers. Production homes are based on basic templates that allow for specified variances. This allows the home purchaser to customize certain aspects of the home, such as flooring, appliances and other amenities.

In addition, the National Home Builders of America state that production-based homebuilders typically offer the following:

  • A variety of different house plans from which to choose.
  • A slate of different product categories that offers buyers the opportunity to choose preferred designs or styles.
  • Package deals containing both a home and the land upon which it will be built.

Although a production home may be less expensive than a custom home, it is still a serious investment. As such, any home you have built should come with a warranty that protects you in case you should discover flaws or defects. Unfortunately, sometimes builders are reluctant to honor their warranties, leaving the homeowner to incur what could be very costly repairs.

If you are having issues getting repairs done on your new home, you may wish to take the matter to a construction litigation attorney. The attorney may be able to have your dispute settled, either by working with the builder directly or by taking the matter to court.
