What to do if hurricane season brings flood damage

In the fall season, Miami residents often find their attention drawn to both the Hurricanes and the hurricanes. The Hurricanes represent the University of Miami, and hopefully their football team will have a good season. On the other hand, we certainly hope the hurricanes that bring heavy rains will have a mild and uneventful season.

But should a hurricane or other major weather event cause flooding, you may experience the misfortune of having your home or business damaged. If you have flood insurance, you may be able to mitigate much of the expense caused by the damage.

If your business or home is damaged or destroyed by a flood, you will likely need to file a claim to receive compensation. After you inform your insurance company of your situation, an adjuster will be assigned to your claim. It is the adjuster who will guide you through the process of filing the claim. In addition, the adjuster will see that you have access to the forms you’ll need to fill out.

From there, you will have to take an inventory of your possessions that were damaged in the flood. It is very helpful if you can provide receipts for these items. You may also want to document the damage by taking pictures or shooting video. You will provide the information you gathered from the inventory to the adjuster, who will in turn help calculate the value of your losses. If all goes well, you will receive the benefits to which you are entitled.

However, if you go through the claims process and your claim is denied, or you believe you did not receive a fair settlement, you may wish to contact a business litigation attorney. An attorney could look over your insurance policy and assess if you were treated fairly. The attorney could then represent your interests as you attempt to have the matter brought to a satisfactory conclusion.
